You might not hesitate to look for a dentist near you if your teeth hurt, but people rarely seek a dentist for regular teeth cleanings. At Stony Brook Dental Group in Stony Brook, NY, we recommend that all of our patients see us twice a year to maintain their dental health.
Regular exams and cleanings in Stony Brook, NY are prophylactic. Their purpose isn’t to treat anything that you’re complaining of, but to keep teeth healthy and in good shape. If you’re experiencing discomfort and visit a dentist, that doesn’t count as a regular visit because the purpose will be to deal with the problem at hand.
The first part of the visit will be focused on examining your teeth. This will involve inspection, palpation, and using our tools. We’ll look for gum inflammation, cavities, and other problems.
Part of the exam will be to look and palpate for potential masses, ulcers, and irregularities. These lesions could be early signs of cancer. If we find something that looks suspicious, we might biopsy it to rule out cancer. Obtaining a biopsy doesn’t mean that the patient has cancer and isn’t a reason to panic. We’ll know more when we receive the pathology report and plan accordingly.
Plaque and tartar can build up over teeth, even in patients who brush their teeth regularly. These are hard collections that form over teeth and contain bacteria. Because of their hard external shell, bacteria on the inside remain safe from toothpaste. They can continue to grow and replicate. If left unchecked, they can lead to gingivitis and other dental issues.
Patients won’t be able to remove these collections at home. They can only be removed using tools available in the dentist’s office. By regularly cleaning your teeth every six months and removing plaque and tartar, your mouth will remain fresh and healthy.
